Join us for the 2nd flagship IEEE British and Irish Conference on Optics and Photonics in London this Christmas

Following the success of last year’s inaugural conference, the 2nd IEEE British and Irish Conference on Optics and Photonics (BICOP 2019) will be held on the 11th – 13th December 2019 at the magnificent IET London in Savoy Place, thus bringing together two of the largest engineering and science institutes in the world.

BICOP 2019 will again include speakers from across industry and academia presenting the latest disruptive advances in optics, photonics and quantum technologies across diverse fields including Communications; Photonic Integrated Circuits; Sensors; Medicine; Manufacturing; Optical Computing. This year we are collaborating with the UK Quantum hubs to present the latest world-leading advances in Quantum Communication, Quantum Computation, Quantum Imaging and Sensors; and Quantum Integrated Circuits on the 12th December.

Professor Sir David Payne CBE FRS FREng will be giving the optics keynote talk on the first day of the conference 11th December. He is a world-class pioneer of technology, whose work has had a great impact on telecommunications and laser technology over the last forty years. The vast transmission capacity of today’s internet results directly from the erbium-doped fibre amplifier (EDFA) invented by David and his team in the 1980s. His pioneering work in fibre fabrication in the 70s resulted in almost all of the special fibres in use today including fibre lasers which are currently undergoing rapid growth for application in manufacturing and defence.
Professor Sir Peter Knight FRS will be giving the quantum keynote talk “Progress with Photonics-enabled Quantum Technology” on the 12th December. Sir Peter Knight was knighted in 2005 for his work on optical physics and is the current Chair of the UK National Quantum Technology Programme Strategy Advisory Board and chairs the Quantum Metrology Institute at the National Physical Laboratory. His research centres on quantum optics and quantum technology. He has won the Thomas Young Medal and the Glazebrook Medal of the Institute of Physics, the Ives Medal and the Walther Medal and Prize of the OSA, and the Royal Medal of the Royal Society.
